The Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale (FRM) is the main charitable funder of French biomedical research. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the FRM encourages, selects and funds over 350 promising new research projects on all diseases every year.
With the constant ambition of opening up medical research knowledge to as many people as possible, the FRM develops and deploys a variety of scientific information media.
Mission 1
Supporting researchers
Convinced of the importance of fundamental research, the breeding ground for all medical innovation, the FRM supports researchers and projects of excellence, with the aim of increasing the knowledge and understanding needed to develop innovative concepts that will lead to major advances, for the benefit of our health.
The Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale supports researchers throughout their careers, giving them the time and resources they need to achieve their mission: to save lives.
TestimonialDenis Duverne, Chairman of the Supervisory Board
The Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale fights for life, by stimulating and supporting progress that has the potential to improve and save lives in the future. With determination, it strives to be the link between researchers, doctors, donors, patients and society.
Our funding programmes
Our funding is divided into two programmes that address current research issues.
The generalist programme
This enables different types of funding to be awarded throughout a researcher's career and in all areas of research, to best meet their needs: PhD students, post-doctoral students, emerging or established teams, etc. The selection criteria include excellence of the project and its promise in terms of knowledge and scientific advances.
The thematic programme (our priority areas)
At the same time, the thematic programme is designed to encourage research in areas deemed to be priorities, corresponding to public health issues as well as research challenges:
- Acting on neurodegeneration
- Preventing the effects of the environment on health
- Repairing the human body
- Accelerating research into Covid-19 and emerging viruses

Assessing advances in research
What stage has research reached? What happens to funded projects?
To keep a close eye on the progress of research and the future of funded projects, the FRM is setting up reviews and a bibliographic watch.
In 2022:
- 1,151 articles published on projects supported by the FRM
- 15.5% of articles in the top 10 in the field (i.e. 10% of the most cited articles)
- 51.5% of articles published in collaboration with foreign teams
Supporting researchers throughout their careers
To unite researchers and support them beyond the funding they receive, the FRM has undertaken a number of initiatives since 2020.
The aim? Create commitment, encourage networking between researchers and provide the best possible conditions for the researchers and teams supported to carry out their projects to the best of their ability.
- A community of researchers on Facebook (+800 members)
- Training courses (management, media training, ecological transition)
- Specific communities of researchers for priority areas
- A platform for the awardees
- Scientific days
Mission 2
Informing and mobilising
Through its communication and scientific information activities, the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale informs its donors and the general public about the advances and challenges of medical research. Through its awareness-raising and mobilisation campaigns, the FRM fulfils its second mission by keeping its donors constantly informed of the progress to which they are contributing, by shedding light on the state of and developments of French medical research, and by deciphering scientific and medical news through the various channels in which it operates.
